Discussing Politics

As adults discuss politics around children, they run the risk of becoming a mouthpiece for the adult’s beliefs. As a rule, children are too young to comprehend the message they receive.

Children are aware and consume information on social media. In addition, they consume what parents and teachers say in a discussion of politics. Some discussions set a bad example for children due to a lack of understanding the entire picture.

Neutral Territory

As students see and hear opposing views, they get a larger picture. Furthermore, they begin to develop the skill of critical thinking. In addition, it teaches them to respect various viewpoints.

Students have a natural curiosity about the world around them. They tune in to a teacher’s and a parent’s conversations. Regardless of one’s affiliation, children must understand the bigger picture. They need to be able to make their own decisions about politics as adults.

Teachers and parents must show children how political decisions are important and have an effect on them. Accordingly, children are taught to agree and obey their parents and teachers. Nevertheless, politics is an area children need encouraged to think freely for themselves. Parents and teachers must tell students that it is okey to have their own viewpoint.

Knowing is Understanding

It is important to know what children think about various issues. Discussions promote independent learning and thinking skills. Subsequently, they clear up misconceptions that have formed from social media or from other people.

Recently, more parents are buying picture books that contain progressive messages. Also, there are books for parents that wish to raise children to be active in political issues.

Children, even young ones have an interest in social issues. Children notice people that are handicapped or a homeless person sleeping on a doorstep. Once they notice, a teachable moment develops. There are many opportunities to discuss government issues on a child’s learning level. When issues are not discussed at a level of understanding, children form their own ideas. A discussion of issues is beneficial to understanding how government and politics work.

Children must understand the media does not represent the whole world. There are various view points to consider. Open discussions and teachable moments help children to understand.
