Teacher requests start before the new school year begins. It has its positives and negatives. Once a designated classroom is assigned, many parents want a change. The best advice is not to change simply to get what some say is the ‘best teacher’

Teachers and administrators know what they are doing as they assign students to classroom teachers. Children learn with all teachers and with students they, at first, do not know.
However, classroom and teacher requests make their way to the office every summer. Many websites have examples of request forms ready to print and use. In fact, individual schools, more than likely, have forms.
Requests Dos and Don’ts
If schools take requests, there is a form or a process.
• Written requests are better than a request in person or one on the phone. However, some school wish in person requests. As a rule, provide the reason for the request. Focus on the child’s needs.
• Word of mouth is not a good reason to choose a particular teacher. All children have individual learning styles. In addition, not all personalities mix well together. Generally, teachers know which personalities fit best.
• Ask questions about style and methods of teaching. Find out about disciplinary procedures. Research if the teacher has disability training. Lastly, research the academic successes of previous classrooms.
• Never speak ill of a teacher regardless of the lack of success with a student. The faculty room is host to many conversations and word gets around.
• Honesty is the best policy. Don’t paint the child as a model student. Provide the shortcomings as well as the strengths.
Teachers and administrators diligently work to create a well-matched learning environment for students. Show respect for the choice made. Trust that the school knowns more than the parent. Remember, focus on what your child needs rather than a specific teacher.
Schools are responsible to create the best learning environment for each individual student and teacher. No matter where a student is placed, a positive attitude is a must for the student’s academic success.
