Math skills are significant for all students. Today, many students and parents complain about learning and understanding math. However, students must have number sense, not memorization, in order to accurately compute basic problems and move on to higher level math.

Math skills are a necessity for everyday use. There are some basic skills that are essential for survival. So, students must master these basic skills to enable them to conduct daily computation. Therefore, they must know how to add, subtract, multiply and divide.

•  Students must learn problem solving. This skill provides students with analytical thinking. Also, it helps students make critical decisions.

•  Next, they must learn to apply the math they learned to everyday situations.

•  Additionally, estimation is a skill that is constantly in use.  It is used in figuring costs and the measurements of various goods. Furthermore, math teaches students to calculate weight, distances, length and width.

•  Computation skills are a necessity. These are the most important skills. Thus, computation is the skill where number sense is key. Calculators are great to use in the situation where basic computation is necessary. However, mental math is easier and faster. Mental math is where number sense is important.

With number sense and not rote memorization, students are able to calculate the problems needed every day.

Necessary Math Skills Questioned

Many parents question whether long division and other math skills are needed. It is said that being proficient in mathematics is a predictor of positive outcomes for young adults. It gives them the ability to move on to post-secondary education. In addition, it helps with their expected future earnings.

One particular mathematics skill that needs learned is long division. The main complaint parents find is the students have no understanding of basic number facts and number sense. Thus, causing difficulty with long division. Students need number sense.  It teaches them to think flexibly in solving basic problems. With number sense, students create number sentences and are able to draw examples of the answer. Thus, providing the student with confidence in working with numbers.

In the development of a solid foundation and understanding of mathematics, students receive a well-rounded education. Many level entry jobs depend on the ability of people to perform basic mathematical computations. Therefore, with math as an important skill, teachers and parents must ensure students know basic key math concepts.
