Pets and Critters for the Classroom

Pets and Critters make excellent classroom management tools. Summer is the time to consider the best classroom pet and/or critter for the new school year. Through classroom pets, children get excited about science and math. Plus, they enable teachers to teach students responsibility. Also, classroom pets enhance and stimulate learning.

Many core lessons focus on classroom pets and critters. Math lessons can turn into a learning opportunity as students focus on the amount of food the pet needs. Students also can keep a chart on how much the pet weights on a weekly or monthly basis. Language lessons start with a prompt about the school pet. Thus, any subject is transformed into a new and interesting topic about the class pet. Additionally, many classroom fun sheets are in use to keep track of the pets.

Classroom Concerns of Pets and Critters

As a pet is considered, there are many points to examine.

  • Experience – It’s important to have experience with the selected pet. Otherwise, consult a pet store for information.
  • Life span – Most pets have a life span. Be aware of how long the pet is to live.
  • Classroom climate – Consider the noise level of the classroom. Also, how much activity is within the area of the pet.
  • Handle – The medical needs of students are a concern. Some pets activate allergies.
  • Diseases – Some pets carry diseases.

Pets are fun to have in the classroom. Consequently, students learn many facts about animals. However, costs of upkeep are a concern as well as school closings. Also, what to do with pets in school closings. During school emergencies, many parents and teachers take in classroom pets.

Unfortunately, some students find it difficult to focus on the teacher because of the pet. On the flip side, others maintain discipline because of the classroom critters.

Unsafe For Some Animals

Unfortunately, some classroom pets die due to overhandling, are left unattended, and unable to be taken to a vet. Plus, some classrooms are noisy and frightening to some animals.

Regardless of the pet or critter, they help many children relax and unwind after difficult academic tasks.
