The Science of reading is continuously under scrutiny.  Many educators question which method of teaching students to read leads to their success. Therefore, there is a disagreement about the use of whole language or phonics. A balanced literacy method is in need.

The pandemic gave reason to parents, as they gave guidance to their child’s reading instruction, to ask questions. Many companies gave a path to ready-made instructional materials that did not lead to success for students vocabulary

The Science of Reading and Phonics

Few reading experts oppose the phonics approach to begin the teaching of reading. A continuum line begins with phonics as the basis of learning to read. Many educators see phonics as an essential part of student success. Others see phonics as one portion of learning to read. It needs to be interwoven in writing and vocabulary, Thus, began the development of comprehension and fluency.

To be able to diagnose which struggles students have with reading they must understand the component of reading. Most educators understand the various components.

Phonemic awareness references the student’s ability to focus on the formation of syllables and words.

Phonics is the relationship between letters and individual sounds.

Fluency enables readers to read at appropriate speed with expression and accuracy as well as comprehension.

Vocabulary is closely related to comprehension, The larger the vocabulary, the more students understand the text.

Spelling, for older students, contributes to vocabulary growth and comprehension. For younger students, spelling supports learning to read.

Motivation

There may be more components than the basic list. However, motivation plays an important factor. Teachers and parents must generate enthusiasm to read. Research states that oral reading to children and any age motivates them to read on their own. Also, visits to the library bolster the love of books. Additionally, schools must create initiatives to promote fun reading. It is important because it develops the mind. Also, it helps students to learn to listen. Reading is fundamental. The process does not always fit all.
