Retake Assessments if Necessary

Retake assessments are an option in many schools. An educator’s goal is to have students reach mastery even if it means retaking an assessment.  It’s important to demonstrate the learning and mastery of a concept.

Students often feel disappointment over grades. Thus, a bad grade often leads students to think there is no point to try harder in a subject. To prevent this, students should retake the test. Also, many students have anxiety as they take a test. As students realize they can retest, the anxiety is less.

Retake Assessment Parameters

There must be parameters in place as students take a retest. Therefore, make sure parents are aware of the retake and its parameters.

  • First, there should be a time limit for the completion of the retake.
  • Next, the student understands it is not the same as the original test.
  • The test with the higher score is on record.
  • Only certain tests or assessments may be eligible for a retake.

Students have bad days as do adults.  Even though it is more work for the educator. It’s about the learning and achievement of students. Therefore, students can learn from their failures.

Non-Believers of Takeovers.

Many argue that a retest makes students less motivated to study. Additionally, critics claim it encourages bad study habits. A retest creates more work for students because they must keep up with new work along with the preparation of a retest. However, as students are aware there is the chance for a retest, they may not thoroughly prepare for the first test.

It’s  About the Learning

Educators do not want the student to have the mindset that tests do not matter. However, the learning is what matters to move further into the subject matter. The drawback is the focus becomes on the grade and not the content.

As students understand they have an opportunity to fail and study what they need to learn encourages them to learn from mistakes. They then develop resilience and can move forward in the learning process.
