Pass or Fail vs. Letter Grades

Pass or fail instead of letter grades are a concern in many schools. The concerns are a result of the pandemic. Many like this option because of remote learning and the students that had difficulties. Many districts are trying to figure out what to do with students that fell behind. Thus, leaving students with the consequences of a failing grade.

This year some students face another year in the same grade because of the pandemic. This especially affects older students because there is not much time left in the school year. Therefore, the concern is the effect leads to a drop out of school. Also, it leads to a dim chance of getting into a selective college for the college-ready student.

Upon the return to the classroom, many students are face-to-face with the old grading scale of A to F. Therefore, The grading system has left many schools to count homework less in addition to class participation.

As schools make allowances for grades or have a system that does not make failure a penalty, students benefit. Today, equality in education is to not give a grade that causes failure. An avoidance of failing grades helps students continue to earn higher grades.

Other schools have a policy that merits high school students to work toward a passing grade from the first semester to the second. However, teachers must encourage students to do extra work.

Pass or Fail

There are usually two purposes of a grading system. First, the system measures the mastery of a skill or subject. Second, it measures how well the subject or skill is to rank students in high school.

The letter grade system varies from district to district or state to state. Switching to a pass or fail may equalize the systems. Thus, it reduces stress levels and competition among students. Also, it encourages the exploration of further knowledge.

Many questions arise with the onset of the pandemic. Grading systems are among the many.
