Student Leadership for the Elementary

Student leadership clubs such as a student council are not only important in high school but also in the elementary grades. It helps students take on leadership roles and gives them a voice. Also, it helps to solve problems that impact the school as well as the community.

The student council helps students to share ideas, interests, and concerns. In the elementary grades, councils or clubs usually start in the 4th grade. The leader or president is usually in the highest grade of that particular school. The students benefit through the opportunity to develop leadership skills. Also, they can deepen friendships within the classroom.

The council gives students practice with communication skills. Additionally, they design campaign literature and use persuasion skills to get students to vote.

Student Leadership Roles

Classroom representatives also hold an important position within the council. Since the class selects one from each room, he or she represents the interests of their classmates. Thus, they share the interest and feelings of others in their class. Also, they take the decisions of the council back to their classroom.

There are other types of leadership roles for the elementary grades. Such roles as a team captain for activities, sports, games, or projects. Also, a chief editor for a classroom newsletter.

Leadership is Important

Leadership qualities look different in each student.

  • Some students have the quality to listen.
  • Others are able to persevere.
  • Honesty is a quality of leadership
  • There are students that are selfless.
  • Still, others are decision-makers.
  • Trustworthy is a quality team leaders need.

These are skills that need to be developed for future success. Therefore, it is important that every student get an opportunity to grow their skills.

Good leaders bring out the best in their team members. Additionally, they are organizers that keep their team on track and focused. It’s important to begin to build leadership in the elementary grades. It gives students an opportunity to be effective communicators and develop their interpersonal skills.
