Rewards or Incentives are Powerful

Rewards are a good way to motivate students. Giving rewards is common. This applies both in and outside the classroom and at all levels, including college. Educators think students work harder if they get something extra out of it. This works with young learners because it focuses their attention.

Rewards do several things. First, they build a learning habit. Young students do not understand why they are learning. They just know they want a reward. Thus, they develop a learning habit. It creates an interest that leads to effort and results.

Rewards that Motivate

All students like being rewarded. Motivational rewards come in various varieties. Extrinsically motivated students enjoy learning. They also like the competition for grades. Or students may have an interest in and enjoy a subject. With a difference in the home or a student’s personality, they are not driven by extrinsic motivation. However, intrinsically motivated students enjoy a reward to motivate them to learn. Either way, rewards and incentives play a powerful part in inspiring students into the completion of a task.

It is not uncommon for educators and parents to use food as a reward. It is acceptable for good behavior. Young students often resist the help of an adult. Therefore, they may need the help of an incentive. Although, a sticker may be enough to motivate. Whichever the incentive, it must be immediate. Incentives must also be manageable.

Building a Reward System

Students often need external motivators to drive them forward in their learning process. In setting up a successful system, think about its daily management.

  • Let students set their own goals for a particular assignment.
  • Along with a reward and verbal praise, explain why it’s important.
  • Always reward the progress, not just the presentation.

Classrooms have happy students when they are successful. Thus, using a reward system leads to happy students. It encourages students to be productive. Thus, students gain a sense of pride and confidence. Students need a positive mindset for them to succeed. Appreciation and rewards have positive psychological effects on students.
