Students and Parents have Choices

Students and parents have options when it comes to schooling. Over 30 years, charter schools have become a popular choice for students. Currently, there are approximately 3 million K-12 students enrolled in charter schools. However, there is ongoing controversy surrounding the effectiveness and funding of these schools, with some states expressing concern.

Despite objections, a law was passed in 2022 that mandated districts to provide funding to charter schools. One of the objections to this was the fact that charters were not subject to the regulations imposed on public schools, even though they were receiving money from them. Many schools have misappropriated money received from the public schools.

Students and parents and Choice

Individuals have the liberty to decide where they want their students to receive an education. Many parents believe charter schools are not taking away funds from traditional public schools since the allocation is based on the number of students attending each school. However, fewer students in traditional schools means less funding.

Charter schools are commonly linked to schools that have poor academic performance and are thought to primarily benefit students from families with higher incomes. This can hurt public schools by causing decreased attendance, which in turn reduces the number of available programs and teachers. Senator Bernie Sanders has voiced his worry regarding this matter, stating that charter schools take away funds from public schools that are already facing challenges.

Charter schools advertise themselves as a means to decrease segregation and promote diversity within schools. However, studies indicate that charter schools contribute to increased segregation. These schools often target wealthier or predominantly white neighborhoods, utilizing strict disciplinary policies as part of their marketing strategy.

Operations Vary

Charter schools, which are funded by the public, are different from regular public schools because they are run by independent groups. The management of public schools is the responsibility of state governments. Charter schools typically must accept all applicants or use a random lottery system for admissions.

Compared to public charter schools, traditional public schools have less flexibility. They are limited in their ability to choose the curriculum and class sizes, whereas other public schools have more freedom. Certified teachers are a requirement for traditional schools, but not for charters. Traditional public school teachers must undergo rigorous certification processes and continuous professional development throughout their teaching careers. Without certified teachers, the teaching methods in traditional schools can become outdated.

When comparing charter schools to traditional public schools, it is found that charter students achieve higher test scores. However, this finding is unclear because it could be that the families attending charter schools are generally more financially well-off.

Charter schools will probably not go away and will continue to be controversial. The Constitution protects students in traditional public schools. It guarantees that all students have the right to a free public education.
