The Basics Are Missing For Students

The basics are missing among today’s students. According to educators, young students cannot put on coats or shoes. They can’t zip shirts or coats or tie a bow or a knot. Among other things, students can’t read an analog clock. Some students can’t even write their full name by the time they are in the fourth grade. This is only a small sample of the skills today’s students lack. Many basics are missing from today’s students’ knowledge base.

Students will pass to the next grade level even though they are unprepared. As far as academics are concerned, many students do not know how to use technology. However, they use AI to write a paragraph. They think using AI and ChatGPT is okay for completing assignments. Students do not consider it cheating.

Missing Basics

Most students do not hold a pencil properly or know how to use scissors. Many students aren’t able to write a basic sentence with correct capitalization and punctuation. Handwriting is also a skill that needs attention. They don’t realize that neat writing or printing is important and needs to be legible. Following directions is a difficult skill.

Many teachers see students struggle to find a page in a stack of papers or in a book. They don’t understand the purpose of an index in a book, and some aren’t even aware that an index exists. Students don’t understand the use of headings for locating information.

Fundamental math skills, such as addition, subtraction, and fractions, are missing. Students have a difficult time counting money or making change from a given amount. They also lack basic geography knowledge, such as the difference between a state and a country. Alphabetical order also confuses many students.

Basics of Critical Thinking

Build the basics of critical thinking by teaching students to ask meaningful questions and practice active listening. Students should practice asking questions to understand, clarify, and engage. Questions help students understand what they read, hear, or write. They need to question, analyse, interpret, evaluate, and make logical judgments about information.

Students lack most of these simple academic skills. Along with academic skills, students lack soft skills. They lack the skill of oral, in-person communication, using correct English, and making eye contact with a person. They don’t understand they should wait their turn or not interrupt when someone is speaking. They also lack skills in written communication, leadership, and punctuality.

There may be a multitude of reasons why students today lack basic skills. Causes can be anything from relocating to a new area, illness, family relationships, or homelessness. Parents are busy. Any challenges students are up against may be the reason they have never learned basic skills.

Interventions help students develop basic skills. Peer interactions and the help of parents may be helpful in developing needed skills. There is a continuous separation between technology, social media, and essential life skills. Unfortunately, much research is needed to begin to address the root of the problem and how to solve it.
