New Year, New Learning

A new year has begun for students.  Were students properly prepared for the new year or did it automatically happen?

The new year is not only about academics.
School is more than academics.

The start of school can be difficult for students of all ages. All students are experiencing a new curriculum, new schedule, new students and teachers and for some, a new school.

Teachers are excited about meeting new students and eager to try new lessons in academics.

Being school ready is important.  Having the supplies and some new clothes to wear will foster the excitement.

A review of last year’s standards and content as well as school rules are covered the first week of school. So now what?  How is the excitement kept into the rest of the year?

Keep The Whole Year Exciting

First, try to keep the excitement in the little experiences for the students.

Next, stay focused on attendance and be on time every day.

Make sure assignments are complete for review.

Organization in both school and at home is important.

Have a place to study and read.

Last, keep communication within the school community.

Students and parents need to discuss their feelings about school to alleviate anxiety and concerns. Keep a positive attitude and a growth mindset. Parents should make new acquaintances as their children do. The first days of school set the stage for the entire year.  Stay aware of what is happening both in and out of school.  It is important to be accountable by thinking beyond academics.

As parents and educators, it’s our responsibility to see that all students are adjusting to the changes the new academic year brings. We must evaluate the transition to enable a successful school year.

Evaluate Your Students During The New Year

Are the students making friends?

Do students/children appear to have good sleeping habits or are they tired? Are they complaining of illnesses?

Do they complain about assignments?

Is their attitude positive about learning?

It is important for teachers and parents to keep lines of communication open. Observe and listen to students’ concerns. Keeping the lines of communication open to parents as well as educators ensures a successful new academic year.
