Memory and learning go hand in hand. And, along with learning, it is essential for student attention and academic success.  Also, it allows students to follow directions.  And, holds new information a student needs for application to solve a problem. Simply, it permits prior information to be applied to the organization of content to bridge new knowledge. The brain relates new information with past experiences to arrive at new knowledge.  As students write, the big picture is kept in mind so ideas can be put on paper.  Mathematically, it aides in solving complex problems. The stronger the working memory, the better it is to learn new material.

Learning is the process that modifies a behavior. And, memory is the ability to remember past experiences.

Small amounts of information (chunking) makes it easier for students/children to remember content.  Consequently. too many new things make learning difficult because the information cannot be retained.  Dr. Alison Preston from the University of Texas at Austin links a memory-pending process that helps to better understand new concepts and make decisions.

Therefore, remembering depends on learning.  And, learning depends on the ability to remember.  The knowledge in the memory builds the foundation to link new knowledge.

Acquiring Good Memory

To have the ability to remember, keep the mind and body healthy.

•   Eat nourishing meals that supply a variety of vitamins.

•   And, drink water to prevent dehydration.

•   Exercise daily.

•  Plus, get the appropriate amount of sleep.

•   Last, play games that make you use your brain.

Remember, it’s all about good health.  These few steps allow for maximum brain function along with skill building.

Teaching Students

Practical memory methods help students to learn. Have them learn to from their own connections in order to memorize. Therefore, teachers and parents must always be on the watch for ways to use memorable images and connections. Simply put, show actual pictures and films that relate to a student’s personal experiences. Also, add images that represent vocabulary, mathematical equations, dates, names and processes.

All in all, don’t take the ability to remember for granted. Students and adults need to build the skills necessary for effective recall in order to learn and comprehend new ideas.
