Attitudes of parents and students toward school change due to the pandemic. Presently, parents feel it is essential to be part of a student’s education. A recent survey states the changes in attitude. Approximately 35 percent of parents said a student’s education was the responsibility of the school. After the pandemic, only 7 percent of parents view education as a shared responsibility.
However, students prefer to have in-person schooling. They feel it is easier to focus, absorb content, and are more productive. Students feel the school environment produces a connection with peers and teachers. This connection is through discussions and conversations in the classroom. Face-to-face discussions produce energy toward learning that is not projected through a computer.
On the other hand, students like remote learning during the pandemic because of the stress of the classroom. Students stress out and have anxiety over safety regulations. They don’t like the mask requirements or social distancing. They feel it distracts them from learning. Additionally, some students like the independence of online learning.
Attitudes Mixed
There are many mixed feelings about student learning. Parents are concerned about students falling academically behind. Parents of students getting in-class instruction are less likely to see them fall behind academically. However, parents feel the students that have partial in-class and partial remote are more concerned with academic progress.
Concern and Attitudes
The pandemic causes concern with social development, especially in the elementary grades. Also, without social development, students are not exposed to further language development. However, parents now share responsibility for the social development of students.
Also, a concern of no traditional classroom setting as before causes some students to have stress and anxiety. Previously, students’ learning time consisted of a small group. It is now more difficult to enter school with students. Additionally, the classroom atmosphere contains partitions, distance stickers on the floor, and possibly eating lunch in the classroom rather than the lunchroom.
All in all, the attitudes of parents and students have changed toward education. The school community is now involved. Additionally, school reform is present.
