Vacations during school time are not typically an excused absence. Technically, it is against the Education Act to take students out of school for a vacation. However, some schools have a policy that enables parents to take a vacation within the school year. Others have a ‘no assignment in advance’ policy for pleasure trips. More and more schools advocate a daily journal. Thus, students keep up with writing skills during their time on a trip. Also, a journal helps students with a presentation to classmates upon their return to school.
As parents request students to travel during the school year, they may face some resistance. First, schools claim that students are in class to engage with other students. In school, students experience three-dimensional learning. Learning is not about worksheets. Students no longer sit at their desks with workbook pages. They spend time with hands-on experiences. Additionally, they engage in group activities. This is difficult to make up.
Also, teachers put in a boat-load of time to prepare for the day’s lesson. They plan individualized instruction for students. Therefore, creating specific lessons for students that are out of school for a vacation adds to the work they do daily. Most families do not realize the burden vacations place on educators as well as the students.
Disruptions
School absences are a disruption to the classroom routine. Thus, students must catch up to new activities and class routines. Some children do not adjust well to different routines and have a difficult time with the make-up work. Many teachers spend time with students after they return to the classroom. They attempt to help the students catch up on the work and routines. Many times, this is a priority with teachers.
Vacations How-To
As parents plan to take students out of the classroom, have a plan. Parents need to know the policy before the start of the school year. Teachers need to be ready for any type of trip for students. Although some trips are a must for students, they need to be prepared to return to the classroom easily.
