School spirit is important to students. It does more than simply show spirit. The point of spirit week is so every student feels like they are part of the school community. The involvement of everyone helps students to perform better academically. Students become more social and more engaged in their community. In general, they are happy with the involvement.
The Love of Spirit Day
Students love many things about school activities. Many activities boost student morale. However, with a week of activities for students, many are inappropriate. They do not promote fellowship. Thus, there are some activities to avoid.
- Crazy Hair Day should not be part of the activities. The message says that there is something wrong with a hairdo. Consequently, many styles are a fad for some students and others are cultural hairstyles. Thus, it creates a wrong message.
- Some schools have Twin Day. This activity isolates some students. Not everyone has a friend close enough to dress the same. Also, it limits families that can not afford to buy additional clothes.
- Dress in Pink or Blue according to gender stereotypes students. There is already enough focus on gender equality.
Any theme that has students make fun of someone is unacceptable. Educators need to examine the message spirit day sends. They should not encourage students to make fun of someone or something. Additionally, the activities should not stereotype.
Spirit days let educators see the personalities of students. Also, it helps teachers to bond with their students. However, there are disgruntled parents.
Parent and Spirit Day
Most parents do not like team spirit days in school. It may be fun for students but not for all. It is not unusual for parents to learn about a team spirit day that morning. A notice possibly got lost in transit from school to home. Or, a parent is distracted and did not see the notice in the backpack or on the website.
Also, some students do not want to stand out. Therefore, it is a nightmare to dress the student for team spirit day. A student knows what they like but does not want the judgment of other students. Regardless of a like or a dislike for these days, the majority of students love them. Team spirit gets students engaged in school and learning. It builds morale and high student achievement in the long run.
