Relationships in the classroom are important for a student’s academic progress. They lead to classroom engagement. Also, they build a positive school climate. As a teacher becomes a mentor to students, they tend to come to class more often. Thus, absenteeism is no longer a problem. They understand that the teacher cares about them and wishes them to succeed.

Intrinsic motivation is important for students. As students feel their work is important, they become motivated to complete the work and move further educationally. Therefore, they have a positive attitude towards school.

In addition to a positive learning environment, relationships between students and teachers strengthen the social-emotional learning of all students. Also, students develop self-regulation skills.

Relationships With Challenging Students

Students must learn to trust the teacher. Trust takes time. Therefore, new students do not trust a person immediately. They do not know the expectations of the classroom. Therefore, there are basic methods to follow to build trust.

***First, get to know students. Understand where and how they live.

***Next, find out their interests and talk to them about what they like.

***Actively listen to their needs and stories.

***Ask them for their opinions and get their feedback. Thus, engage them in lessons and activities.

***Stay positive in their learning needs. Differentiate when possible.

***Safety is most important. Students must feel safe intellectually, creatively, emotionally, and physically.

***As teachers cultivate empathy for their students and with their students find they can manage behavior along with academic engagement.

***Remember to laugh with them. As the teacher enjoys what is done in the classroom, students also enjoy the learning. Enjoyment and enthusiasm are contagious.

Teachers have an impact on their students. Plus, the impact lasts well after they graduate. The relationship provides guidance and support for a student’s success. It is important to nurture students in school.
