Celebrating 100 Days of School

Celebrating 100 days of school is a popular theme in schools. It is fun for students and has educational value. Students participate in many activities. Plus, it reinforces reading, writing, and math skills.

Many classrooms begin counting from the first day of classes. The anticipation begins the first day as a math lesson. Students make use of sticks that eventually become a ten bundle. The ones and tens slowly develop into 100. Thus, 100 usually develops around Valentine’s Day depending on the start of the school calendar.

Celebrating 100 Ideas

The history of this celebration began in 1979. In a math program called Math Their Way, students create a Days of School Graph. A teacher published the idea a couple of years later in a newsletter. Thus, the celebration of 100 days emerged.

Celebrations are good for everyone. They may even involve the community because the number 100 has many connotations. Thus, 100 percent participation. Or, 100 percent completion of activities. Students can reflect and celebrate their learning for the past 100 days of school.

Celebrating 100 days also gets family involvement in school. Many schools have students bring items from the home to celebrate 100. With specified items from home, students learn about divergent lifestyles and cultures.

Other classrooms incorporate writing skills into the celebration. They include writing prompts for individual a well whole class activities. The writing also includes poems that reflect on past or future 100 years. The planning of the celebrations with students and parents makes the learning fun.

Many activities are great for centers, small groups, o whole classroom. Students have fun learning no matter how the chosen activities evolve in various subjects.

100 Days in the Virtual Classroom

The pandemic causes many classrooms to be virtual. However, a 100-day celebration still is possible.

  • Students enjoy the creation of digital portraits or word art.
  • The creation of a personal narrative from a template is a great writing activity.
  • Discuss something they have been told 100 times.
  • Students take a photo of themself in a costume depicting 100.

100-day celebration is a fun way for students to learn. It doesn’t matter whether it’s in the brick-and-mortar classroom or the virtual zoom classroom. After all, it’s about learning.
