Guns for teachers get approval by many states. Many adults, other than teacher, can also carry a gun. The 1990 law that cites Gun-Free School Zones Act does not apply to adults with concealed carry permits.
Recent shooting allows the state of Ohio to allow teachers to carry guns in the classroom. However, there is much opposition from teachers and a police group. People in favor say it makes schools safer. Critics say it does not. They feel it makes it more dangerous.
In Ohio, the new law reduces training time from 700 hours to 24 hours. Despite opposition from parents, the law stands. Others feel it is better for teachers to have guns because there is a limit to school resources. Districts can not have police officers in all district schools. School security experts debunk this theory. They see the small amount of training is only a way to save money. Thus, shows a lack of commitment to safety.
Guns Terrify Teachers
Gun laws that allow teachers to carry guns frustrate many educators. They say it’s not a good idea. There are too many unintended consequences of a gun in the classroom. In addition, guns in the classroom may prevent other people from entering the educational profession.
It is easy to leave a gun unattended in the classroom. Educators walk around while students work on assignments and various group projects. Students and teachers do not need the worry about another student getting the teacher’s gun. Teachers with a gun must change from teaching to expert shooters in a chaotic situation. Thus, teachers in a high-stress situation reduces the level of accuracy.
Teacher Leaders
Many teachers wonder who assumes the liability for an accident with a gun. They wonder if and how to teach about the gun they carry into the classroom. They wonder where to store the gun and how to get it when needed.
Presently, there is little to no evidence that equipping teachers with guns reduces school violence and mass shootings. The lack of armed responders isn’t the problem. Many school buildings need updated security equipment. The buildings need better communication methods with first responders. They need updated control devices for doors along with cameras for surveillance. All this costs money. Money that is mostly spent on much needed educational programs and materials.
Schools must be a safe place for students and teachers. They must be able to teach and learn without fear. Public schools need money to support the education of students. Students must be properly educated to protect our future and our democracy.
