Transitioning Made Easy

The beginning of the new year is important to students, teachers, and parents. A positive perspective can help students take on the opportunities ahead of them. Listen to their feelings about the new year and affirm their fears and joys. Ask questions about why they feel as they do. Stick to a routine. Let students know your fears and concerns. Celebrate the new year and make it special.

Reviewing a few concepts from the previous year helps acclimate students to the new school year. Looking at notes or reviewing subjects from the previous year is helpful. Review old report cards and projects from the last year.

Think about the topics and courses they will take and the books they must read. Discuss the goals they want to achieve.

Create a study space where it helps the student to concentrate and eliminates distractions. Organize the materials that stay in the study space and those that go to school every day.

Have the book bag, lunch, or lunch money ready in the morning. Include items for an emergency such as tissues and bandaids. Remember to include cell phones, house keys, and passes that the student needs.

Preparing for the new year is important for a successful year. Know what to expect and be ready.
