AI and Digital Literacy in Schools

AI and digital literacy means the simulation of human intelligence processed by machines. It can give students personalized and engaging learning experiences. Its use provides students with fundamental skills in reading, math, science, and history. AI is the science and engineering of problem-solving through machine learning. Thus, it is STEM education.

Teaching students about AI is important in developing their digital literacy and critical thinking skills. Teaching them to understand AI systems helps them to engage safely with the technologies. AI is a subset of digital learning. AI uses algorithms and machine learning to automate tasks that previously used human intelligence such as speech, language processing, and image recognition.

Digital Literacy and its Importance

Society today embraces an AI era. AI is a group of many technologies that work together. It enables machines to sense, comprehend, act, and learn similar to a human. Therefore, schools must see that students have access to digital literacy training and use the training to include AI technologies.

Students can’t achieve digital literacy through their aimless exploration or interactions with toys. Students need to understand how the AI devices work. Otherwise, according to a survey, they will use artificial intelligence to do school assignments. Thus, preventing them from doing the homework themselves.

AI and Digital Literacy

Students encounter AI with their smart devices and social robots. However, they lack the means to examine these items through personal interaction. Exposing young children to robotic toys gives them creativity, collaborative inquiry skills, computational thinking and language skills, and adaptive behaviors. Thus, they gain increased exposure to an understanding of AI. This enables a student’s reasoning about digital technologies and helps refine their skills.

Age-appropriate learning opportunities help young students understand the basic functions of AI. Scaffolding the opportunities to students encourages them to ask questions, and inquire and manipulate toys safely and appropriately. The toys help students understand how computers think and how robots work.

Access to AI education helps close opportunity gaps and gives students skills to compete in today’s world. Technology advances every day. Inquiry-based classrooms benefit from AI in the classroom through questioning. Thus, more teachers and students explore AI in the classroom.
