Misspelled Words by Students

Misspelled, mispronounced, and misused words are common in writing and speaking.  The prefix ‘mis’ is a morpheme that means not, wrongly, or incorrectly. There are mispronounced words from students and teachers. Many misspelled words come from students’ writing. Other words are commonly misused because they sound similar (homonyms) or they sound the same, but their meaning is different. Others are mispronounced, leading to misuse and misunderstanding.

Misspelled Words

Many spelling mistakes arise from a lack of writing time or a lack of awareness of a new word’s spelling.

  • Other mistakes are made because students do not understand parts of speech.
  • There is a lack of understanding about whether the word is a noun or an adjective.
  • Pronouns are often misused because of the use of ‘it’.

The use of writing skills and grammatical rules is a major part of correct spelling and usage. Writing and the proper use of words are interconnected. They strengthen each other. The more students write, the more they reinforce their knowledge of word usage and spelling.

The Misuse of Words

Many students misuse words in both speaking and writing. A limited vocabulary and the constant use of social media (texting) can be reasons for this misuse. Limited reading skills can also cause students to misuse words. The more students read, the more their vocabulary develops.

Students misuse homophones. Homophones sound alike but have different spellings and meanings. When texting or using a computer to write assignments, spell check or auto check doesn’t always produce the correct word. Students need to practice editing skills so they can correct the misuse of words.

Words Mispronounced

Students who read quickly tend to mispronounce words. Students who sound out a written word before hearing it are likely to mispronounce the word. They tend to follow phonetic rules. Often, mispronunciations can lead to miscommunication.  As students communicate, they must know what their words mean so others can understand the conveyed message.

Words matter. They represent how a how a student thinks and feels. It’s important how students convey a message. The misuse, misprounced, or mispellled words can cause confusion. They affect people and the the world around them. They represent the person communicating.
