Math instruction becomes the focus with AI emerging into schools. Math scores have been low since the pandemic without changes today. The need for math instruction to evolve is not new. However, school systems change practice slowly.

Schools are facing the challenge of engaging students in math lessons. It is essential to take action to find innovative ways to make math stimulating and captivating for students. While schools have tried new programs, strategies, and initiatives to help students achieve mathematical success, they have seen little success in raising scores. The need to improve mathematical skills among students is a concern for educators.

  • Reduce student anxiety and fear of math. Students need help to understand why math is important.
  • An emphasis on the basics such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Fundamentals are important. Students can’t move to more conceptual lessons without the basics.
  • Students must achieve number sense.

Math Instruction and AI

It is necessary to revise the instructions provided for teachers’ professional development. With the use of AI tools, math problems can be solved easily and the process of number sense can be provided to students and teachers. AI tools facilitate a student’s math thinking by guiding them through the process.

Student success depends on the instruction they receive. Proficiency takes many forms with no particular way of instructing for success for all students. Proficiency depends on the learners. A classroom that encourages discussions and sharing of ideas on the process and solutions of a problem gives students an understanding of math sense.

AI math tutors help students find their proficiency level and provide practice in areas that need improvement. It responds to the way students think and to their interests. AI assists teachers as the students learn new concepts from prior knowledge. However, AI does not replace teaching methods or problem-solving skills.

AI assists teachers in identifying student strengths and weaknesses and tailoring individual learning pathways. Teachers often struggle to find the time to plan multiple tasks within their already busy schedules. The student’s computer or learning center time can be used for programs such as Prodigy or Zearn. These simple games adjust a student’s difficulty level based on their performance.

Mathematics is a subject that evolves with the progress of science. The use of traditional tools such as slide rules and standard teaching practices is no longer sufficient. Unfortunately, student math scores are declining. Therefore, it is crucial to adopt new teaching methods that incorporate AI to enhance learning outcomes. Many educators are embracing this approach to improve student performance in mathematics.
