Absenteeism in school is high. Research from the Ad Council states that there are approximately 7.5 million students that miss a month of school for any reason. A student that is absent is sure to fall behind academically. In addition, they are at risk of not graduating from high school. Success depends on classroom attendance. Missing only two days a month out of the school year causes a child to fall behind. 
Effective programs that address attendance concerns need collaboration and partnerships among agencies, law enforcement, and juvenile courts. Parents and families must be actively engaged to provide input of their children.
Absenteeism and Misconceptions
Parents think absences will not hurt a child’s academic performance. They feel that an occasional absence will not make a difference. This attitude reflects onto the student. The student in turn, recognizes that when a good excuse is provided, it’s okay to miss school. This attitude continues into adulthood. In addition, many parents believe that regular attendance doesn’t count until after the student is in the sixth grade. In truth, attendance in the early grades is essential for success through all grades.
By the time a student with attendance problems is in the sixth grade it is too late. Research shows that rates of absenteeism in kindergarten and first grade can rival those in high school. Therefore, early grade level attendance is essential for developing strong work habits. Consequently, early grades are where a positive and meaningful attitude toward school occurs.
As schools place an emphasis on attendance, it reflects on the importance our nation places on education. It recognizes that being in school on a daily basis is necessary to prepare students for adulthood.
Vacations
Discuss off season vacations with the teacher. A trip or vacation is an educational experience. Most teachers are accepting of the fact that students travel. Therefore, they are willing to work with parents to connect the student’s experience to school.
The vacationing student isn’t the norm. A lot of absenteeism is prevalent in poor and minority communities. Also, it varies in middle-class neighborhoods with many single-family homes. It starts with a lack of a positive attitude toward school and learning. Whether the absences are excused or unexcused, classroom attendance is important. Today’s careers are dependent on collaboration and working together as a team. The classroom builds knowledgeable, self-determined strategic, and empathetic thinkers. It enables them to interact and communicate with staff members and other students. The bottom line is, daily attendance is the formula for success.
