Children get trophies for just about everything today.  Actually, this occurrence has been going on for at least 30 years. Are we afraid of hurt feelings? Or, are we building self esteem? Reality has it that athletes play to win regardless of any trophy.

trophiesAccording to a Reason-Rupe poll in the Washington Post published in 2014, people between the ages of 25 – 65 say that only winners should receive trophies. And, 18-24 year olds say that all kids should get participation awards. In a survey of income groups in the 30k range, all participants claim all should receive trophies. The groups between 30k-50k were even and from 45k to 110k felt only winners should receive trophies.

Studies on the impact on trophies given to children report a negative impact. These children are self-obsessed, irresponsible, and unmotivated.  In an HBO special, the effort to make each child feel special is the reason for participation awards, regardless of playing. And, regardless of last place.  Some children received awards and didn’t even show up for most of the games.

The Good and Bad of Trophies

Children need to understand that loosing is okay.  Teach them that it takes practice, hard work,  and many hours to get good at something,  Help children to build on their strengths and abilities. In addition to learning to loose, children need to learn commitment. These are important skills that enable children to grow into responsible, successful adults.

Playing sports is important for healthy minds and bodies. In addition, children learn processes, rules, skills, and protocols. It’s not about everyone earning a trophy. It’s about a well-rounded education both in school activities and outside activities.

In very young children, coaches argue that providing an award for participation encourages children to join the sport again. However, that must not be the primary reason. The context that goes with the trophy is important. If it’s merely for participation, then children need to understand. Otherwise, giving a trophy simply for playing is an empty gesture.
