Teenagers can be difficult when it comes to communication. They develop values and beliefs that are different to parents as well as educators. Despite that, it is a normal part of the developmental stage.  However, the issues teen deal with affect communication.

Issues And Teenagers

•   Teens need both parents and educators to help with decisions.

•   Parents and educators must help in several problem solving solutions so teens can come to a decision or a solution.

•   Viewpoints differ for various situations.

•   Adults must be supportive in decisions no matter what.

•   Listen more and talk less as parents and educators.

•   Don’t lecture. Show respect.

•   Keep emotions away.

Both parents and educators recognize that teens don’t have the same level of information and experiences. However, they do have the same logical tools.  They are able to understand what is sensible.

Take advantage of a spontaneous conversation at lunch, in the hall, in the car, or when casually out.  When a teen becomes rude or out of line, don’t get pulled into a fight. It is easy to stay calm when you don’t engage.  Most teens are happy to hear opinions. However, share opinions that are not judgmental or condescending.  Stay away from personal issues that make teens defensive.

Teaching teens interpersonal skills is the key to future success. No matter how technologically advanced we become, the basics of getting into college, or an acquired job interview, verbal communication is necessary. And remember, communication doesn’t only involve spoken language.  It also involves electronic words as texting, social networking sites, web chats and emails.

Positive electronic communication skills are important. Teach teens to be sensitive and respectful to create a positive interpretation of the typed words. Otherwise, misunderstandings occur.

Solid communication skills require teens to use a clear voice that matches body language.  An awareness of the language portrays confidence or lack of.  Teach them to express themselves well and authentically. Verbal communication is a skill that breeds success.  Teach children the art of expression and success will follow.
