Teach disrespectful children how to have respect. The fact is, parents and teachers cannot teach respect by being disrespectful to children. Respect is the foundation of successful relationships. So, it’s most critical to teach children the importance of respect.
Children are not born with an understanding of respect. They need taught. Otherwise, they lack manners and etiquette. Today’s world demonstrates disrespect. Therefore, it’s more import than ever to teach our children proper manners. As children say ‘thank you’ for an object or a treat, they learn not to expect everything to be handed to them.
Disrespectful behavior is common today. And, as we see and hear disrespectful children, it’s easy to look away or make an excuse for the action. But, the more a child is disrespectful, the more acceptable the action.
Rudeness From Adults
Today, children see and hear disrespect on television, social media and everyday conversations. They hear adult conversations that are not very nice. Also, they see politicians and other adults on the news making comments that are inappropriate. Therefore, it is important to teach children what is right and wrong with what they hear. Teaching good manners has significant implications. And, it’s important to model respectful actions toward each other at school, in the home and community. However, nagging about manners doesn’t do the trick, it’s about good modeling.
Disrespectful Children
Rudeness is not always intentional. Children don’t realize their actions are impolite. Therefore, they speak loudly and many times, interrupt when adults are speaking. As children demonstrate respect and good manners, they demonstrate respect for the sensitivities of others. In addition, showing respect to others is an indication that they listen to parents and teachers. He/she does what is taught and demonstrates good character.
The civility of our culture depends on today’s teachers, parents, and children to demonstrate good manners and respect others. As respect is displayed, it sets a standard that keeps order and civility in society.
