Classroom Teachers’ Qualifications

Classroom teachers are qualified to teach in regular classrooms. However, they may not have the qualifications to teach autistic students in the regular classroom.  Some professionals claim that colleges aren’t doing enough to prepare educators. Others say, special students must have a special ed teacher. Also, many question the education the ASD students receive as they are in the mainstream class.

Even though there are many intervention strategies for teachers of students with ASD (autism spectrum disorder), there is not a one-size-fits-all strategy. In the United States, 1 in 68 children are identified with ASD. And, regular classroom teachers are to provide resources and instruction for all students.

Classroom and Students

The ASD student in a general education room creates an involved process for the teacher.  The teacher’s responsibility is to teach and help every student reach his/her academic potential.  Also, to follow the IEP of the ASD student.  And, for students to establish a positive relationship with the teacher.  Thus, reach academic goals in the regular class. Therefore, many professionals encourage inclusion whenever possible. Social interaction interventions are helpful for ASD students as they must be able to interact with regular ed students as much as possible. In addition, integrating students into the regular ed room improves the learning goals for all students. The entire class benefits.

•  ASD students add to the diversity of the class.

•   Also, they bring various strengths.

•  They create a positive climate within the classroom. They help others and others help them in return.

•   And, instructional methods improve with differentiated instruction. This benefits every student’s learning needs.

It is a well known fact that educators need professional development. And, regular ed teachers must have some training in order to effectively instruct ASD students with regular ed students. However, not many schools make the offer to train teachers. So, they must struggle on their own to discover the most effective methods of teaching. In doing so, all students benefit and all will meet academic success.
