Many schools do not permit the use of cell phones while in the classroom. However, there are many reasons for their use in daily lessons. Today, a lot of students are using smart phones. And, they take them to school every day. Usually, the cell phone is put away so it is not available for the students ‘ personal use during time in class. Still, they serve as a valuable learning tool.
Recent research indicates 95% of high school students use cell phones at some point in school. They surf the internet, access social networks, stream videos on YouTube and text. Teachers are now finding ways to integrate the phone for educational reasons. And, students are learning how to use cell phones responsibly.
• Student use them as reminders. They remind themselves of assignments and exams.
• Students are able to research various projects. Not all classrooms have computers available for immediate use but, most students have a phone ready for use.
• The sharing of material is easily done with a mobile phone. Students can take and share pictures or videos.
• In science or math class, students use phones as stop watches and calculators.
All Children Use Cell Phones
Currently, most middle and high schools permit instructional use of phones. However, with advancing technology, cell phones are showing up in elementary schools. Reasons being, parents want to stay in touch with children for safety reasons. So, why ignore the fact that many students have a cell phone within their immediate vicinity. As a result, utilize them as a source of research.
Using cell phones in elementary classrooms help to meet current technology needs. Digital instruction permits educators to take and use resources that are beyond the school’s limits.
Cell phones in school is an ongoing debate. And, there are many pros and cons for this issue. Nonetheless, schools must face the fact that students of all ages have and use mobile devices. So, it’s time to embrace the technology available. And, let students learn at their comfort level.
