Vulnerable students struggle academically and socially.  They are more at risk of bullying or being bullied than stronger students. Also, They struggle with academic materials. And, they feel inhibited when they must ask for help. Most vulnerable students feel they are invisible.

Students are vulnerable if they are not growing and developing as most students in their school.  And, many students go through the school and home environment feeling unnoticed and unseen. Invisible students and students that feel helpless do not always have a parent that sees them off to school. Single parents are often working or just not around for this task. Therefore, vulnerability reasons are due to a number of factors including low self-esteem and a poor self-image.

Vulnerable Students And What To Do

Open spaces and shared learning experiences help the susceptible student participate in learning experiences. In addition, simple gestures from teachers, students and parents make students feel noticed.

•   Friendly comments or questions about an accomplishment or an event is important.

•   Pay attention to an academic interest. Comment on the positive.

•   Also, a comment on a sticky note goes a long way for a person’s self-esteem.  And, parents can include a helpful note in a student’s lunch, on a pillow or on the bathroom mirror.

•   As an educator, greet each student everyday by their name.

•   Give them a responsible task to acomplish.

Many times invisible students prefer to stay unnoticed. However, it is essential that educators and parents make them feel significant. They need acknowledged and included. It is consequential to understand the root of the problem without altering who they are. Empower them to develop soft skills for positive interactions with others.

We must help vulnerable students become visible. Because, it places them on a level playing field both educationally, socially and emotionally.  Success in school and life comes from educators and parents that care.  Regardless of how quiet and or reticent a child may be, they must not become invisible.
