Difficult parents can be a headache for educators. They are a challenge for everyone. And, conversing with them takes patience.  However, the term difficult  comes in many shades.  Therefore, they require tactful methods.  No matter the parent or guardian or in-law; they have an effect on educators. Educators are hurt, confused and disappointed in parents that put unnecessary demands on students.  Simple strategies, understanding and compassion will help everyone involved.Difficult parents

Dealing with Difficult Parents

•   People are simply people.  All parents and teachers want the best for their children and students. Therefore, parents are emotional about their children and want to keep them safe and protected.  Still, some parents are more emotional than others. And, some can’t see logic even if it’s about the educational needs of the student.

•  Conferences and meetings need met without high expectations. As parents make demands, teachers feel wronged.  Teachers see things from inside the classroom. Therefore, they see a different side of the student. Expectations dictate how both parties feel. As a teacher, let go of expectations and accept the situation.

•   Have insight as to when to speak and when to listen.  Listening provides an insight to the parents’ view.  And, when speaking, think about the power of words.

•   Find the good and a positive in a situation.  Start the meeting with a positive comment. Positive words can work wonders and change the tone of the meeting

•   Difficult parents make teachers feel guilty and hurt. However, do not be emotionally manipulated. Many times, teachers can’t do what a parent asks.  Agree with the parent but stress your decision.

•   Be direct and affirmative in the decision best suited for the educational and emotional needs of the student.

•   Keep copious records of meetings and messages with parents. Also, keep a record of a student’s progress.

•   Focus on the goal or outcome. Do not focus on the relationship.

Remember, difficult parents won’t go away.  The students’ education and emotional wellness is the main concern. Successfully collaborating with parents and caretakers is difficult.  Teachers must take care not to get emotional or upset. Not all parents get along with teachers. And, it is okay.
