Attention That Children Seek

Attention is not unusual for children and teens to demand. Some children visualize themselves as the center of the universe. They behave in a manner that the world revolves around them. Additionally, parents treat children as they are the center of the universe. Nevertheless, this demand for attention gradually diminishes as children get older. However, when it affects others around them negatively, adults must act. Children need to feel special and loved. Nonetheless, other family members need not suffer as a result. Families with multiple children must give attention to all children, not simply focus on one.

Another problem is the child that demands attention as the adult is on the phone or in the middle of business. At times, children do not realize the interruption.  Other times, children may feel anxious and need to speak. Therefore, the root of the problem must be determined.

As a child or teen is about drama, this must stop. It is not healthy for the display of drama. The reason for the display of drama is because the person can not handle emotions. Drama in teens, at times, has to do with biology. Specifically, brain development and hormonal shifts. Othertimes, dramatic reactions reflect a teen’s exploration of emotions. Therefore, once the teen becomes comfortable within, the drama subsides. Validating actions is the best way to deal with the problem of drama.

Attention Seeking

Children and teens seek attention in various ways. They may be bored, tired, hungry, or simply want to spend time with someone. With young children, seeking attention is normal. Young children are not able to tell the difference between what they need and what they want.

Many times, simply ignore the child or teen as the drama occurs. Let them calmly know to calm down before action is taken. To shout or yell only compounds the problem. Attention seeking is an annoyance.  Most of the time it’s normal. If the problem continues, consult a professional.
