Morale Boost During Hard Times

The morale of students, teachers, and parents is difficult to keep high. This is especially critical during stressful times. Every day educators adapt lessons to the needs of students. Additionally, they deal with students’ concerns, parent concerns, and teachers’ concerns. Both students and parents feel unmotivated and emotionally void in today’s situation. Thus, teachers try to keep themselves motivated to deal with the stress of others while they deal with their own.

Student Morale

Many students fear attending school on a part-time basis. Additionally, others feel overwhelmed as they are stuck at home with remote lessons. However, students need to attend school regardless of the situation.  Whichever the cause of the stress, educators must help these students to feel better about school.

Students need an outlet. If the mask is an issue, students need an outside break to take them off for a time. So, as students need a moment, let them step out of the classroom. Therefore, there needs to be a sign to signal the teacher that they need a moment. A safe space as a retreat is a must. Outlets are important, even for the teacher. As they attend remotely, it is good for students to see their classmates. Even though it is not the same as in person, they can talk and laugh together.

Teacher Morale

With the COVID pandemic, many surveys document a decline in teaches’ enthusiasm. It is understandable. School isn’t the same. In the classroom, students sit apart from each other. Additionally, they wear masks. Thus, teachers are not able to see their faces and understand their thoughts. Parents and other educators need to help the classroom teachers’ enthusiasm.

  • Inspire, praise, and most of all, show joy. These actions are contagious and reduce stress. Provide validation to their methods.
  • Emotional support is beneficial to all. There is always time for mindfulness. Also, reflection and self-care are important.
  • Share thoughts, feelings, and ideas. Develop a community and culture that strengthens and supports.
  • Time is valuable. Teachers need time to prepare, plan, conference, collaborate, and rest. They also need to engage in professional learning and reflecting.

Just because students and teachers are not consistently together, does not mean it can’t be fun. Spirit activities and the creation of various themes are important to the morale and success of students and teachers. Happy teachers make happy students.
