Step-up day in schools helps students transition into the new year. On step-up day, students get a preview of the next grade level. They visit the classroom of the grade above them and meet their teacher(s). They learn about the subjects and curriculum they will study.
Many students experience anxiety as their school year ends, and the knowledge of going to a new classroom with a new teacher begins. Providing students with clear and consistent information about what to expect in the new school year reduces the uncertainty.
Step-Up Made Simple
Students get excited and emotional about moving to the next grade level. It’s best to prepare students beforehand. Question and answer discussions help ease anxiety. Brainstorm questions and revisit the chart afterwards. A scavenger hunt for the new classroom environment helps students to locate various areas in the room and the hall. After a visit to the new classroom, review the questions and discuss their discoveries. Including guest speakers who are older students can ease tension and answer questions. Peers are a good source of help for others transitioning to another classroom.
Opportunities for students to meet their future teacher(s) are important. It’s also important for parents to meet new teachers. This helps students to adjust. Provide activities for parents to use before the new year.
Schools have a step-up at the end of the year to ease student stress. It’s a natural part of the school year. The transition helps students with and without disabilities adjust to changes in classmates, schedules, and routines. The goal is to create a successful transition for students.
Celebrations to End the Year
Celebrate the end of the year by helping students feel excited about their upcoming year. A farewell party for students leaving one grade level for another is fun for all. Display pictures, show a slideshow, or a movie of the many activities they’ve enjoyed and those of other grade levels to help ease anxiety.
A year-end ceremony, along with step-up day, helps mark the transition from the past to the future. A two-part ceremony (closing and opening) honors the end of a new beginning.
Ceremonies designate important moments. They reflect on the learnings from both the content and the social-emotional experiences. They unite students and give them a sense of belonging. They give students memories and a path to create more. School is about the students and the bonds they create in a safe and educational environment.
