Parents need to have an open involvement with schools. A strong relationship with schools has a significant effect on students in many ways. Begin the new school year with communication with families. Before school starts, use an email, phone call, or an introductory letter to welcome the family and new student. Send a postcard and encourage them to send a note back with a positive fact about their student. This relieves some of the stress families have about a new teacher or school.
Set up a day before school begins to be available for informal meetings with parents and students. This alleviates grade discussions or expectations. An informal meeting is also a good way to establish the best way for two-way communication during the year.
If an informal meeting is not possible, send a video message. A personalized introduction is an easy way to connect with parents and the new student. Include a summary of what to expect in the upcoming school year. Let them know how and when they can reach out to find school and classroom information, or to ask a question.
Parents and Young Students
Meeting parents of young students need to know what is expected.
- Make sure students can manage their clothes.
- They need to know when and how to wash their hands.
- Make sure students can follow directions.
- Students should understand how to communicate when they need help.
- Students need to work with their peers. They need to share school tools and resolve small conflicts.
A ‘Heads-up” is needed
Inform parents to prepare students for school. Make them excited about things they will learn. Show parents and students the drop-off area so they are not confused or traumatized.
