Motivation toward reading is a concern for teachers and parents. Some students simply do not like or want to pick up a book. Although, reading builds everyone’s vocabulary. But, it is sad to say that many students do not read every day. Most students read less than 15 minutes daily. Therefore, only 1.5 million words are in their vocabulary from reading as of graduation.
No Motivation
A lack of motivation to read reflects a student’s low self-confidence in reading skills. Also, it reflects no input in a choice of reading material. As students read material that is too difficult to understand, motivation is lost. Therefore, they do not choose to read. there are many other reasons that students do not read.
- – Many students have too much to read.
- – Their work or activity schedule is too busy for them to read for enjoyment.
- – The student can not find a book that motivates the love to read.
- – They need reading strategies to help with new vocabulary or help with comprehension skills.
Building MotivationA view of the human brain shows many parts must work together as a student reads.
Thus, the brain is not built to read. All parts of the brain get stronger through the reading process.
Reading out loud to students and children exposes them to new genres and authors. Also, it models strategies to visualize the story. The introduction of the new vocabulary is also built as a student or child listens to the reader. Oral reading is beneficial to students through middle school
Reading is a life-long process. It is a necessary task that everyone uses daily. As students are independent readers, they begin to transition from school reading to read for their own enjoyment. Thus, there is self-improvement in the process of communication. Additionally, the desire to read becomes a habit.
