Socialization Equals Intelligence

Socialization is how we spend time with peers.  Humans are naturally social animals.  As a matter of face, we like to be part of a group. So, how does being social go with being smart. In a study conducted at the University of Michigan, it was found that social interaction aided intellectual performance. And, the interaction with other people exercises the mind. Does this play a part in intelligence?socialization

Socialization is the way children begin to acquire the skills necessary to function in today’s world. It is how children interact with their peers. In school, socialization is mostly done at play. However, if recess or, ‘free’ time is taken away, there is no casual peer to peer interaction.

Reasons For Socialization In Schools

•   First, students learn about others. They learn differences and similarities.

•   They learn about different cultures.

•   Moreover, children learn skills that will help them in the future.

•   They learn the value of activities outside of school.

•   Through socializing, they learn problem solving, cooperation and self-control.

However, research finds there is no positive correlation between socializing and intelligence. Children, teens and adults build an awareness of their surroundings with their established social skills.  But, they are not any more intelligent.  There are many intelligent students and adults who love to socialize. And, on the flip side, there are many brilliant people who hate it.  Intelligence depends on many factors which are multi-determined. Two of the most important factors are genetics and environment. Studies indicate that highly intelligent people prefer to be alone. They love their own company.

Building ‘soft skills’, or social and emotion intelligence is critical to a student’s total development regardless of whether it builds academic intelligence. Nonetheless, the ability to make sense out of the actions of others is critical to students. They must critically think and process information. Then, they must apply the new facts. Accordingly, IQ alone is not a measure for success, it goes hand-in-hand with emotional intelligence.
