Pandemic’s Children

Pandemic’s children will be mentally affected. However, nobody knows how for sure. This pandemic affects all lives. There are many pressures on homes, jobs, families, and schools. Thus, it takes everyone, including children, out of a normal life to a new normal. Still, most children are resilient. Thus,  the effects are not readily noticeable.

It’s known that Pandemic’s children with direct exposure feel the effect. These children are the ones that got sick, a family member got the disease, there was a loss of a job, and several other direct family struggles. According to Dr. Gurwitch, “Children certainly are being impacted by this because it’s changed their worlds,” He continues to say, “Just because kids are resilient doesn’t mean we don’t need to do anything to help them. The majority of children are resilient because we, their trusted parents or caregivers, do something.”

Pandemic’s Guide

Guide children through this pandemic by a focus on what’s positive. Regardless of what happens, find something positive so children are optimistic. Also, talk to children about their feelings. Validate how they feel through understanding their concerns. Also, it’s a good time to bring difficult topics into discussions. Thus, a conversation quiets their worries. Talk about how to stay safe. Conversations provide parents a chance to listen and correct misconceptions and misinformation.

Positives of the Virus

•   First, the pandemic has reduced the carbon footprint. The air has improved and the water is cleaner.

•   Families have more time together. Parents, caregivers, and siblings are playing together more often.

•   With bonding time, families understand their strengths and weaknesses and build on them.

•   Next, everyone enjoys the outdoors more together.

However, it is too early to determine the pandemic’s positives and negatives. Remember, even in a crisis, shared experiences bring families together. Children see that people lend a hand to help others in difficult times. However, many needs must be taken to resolve issues of the current situation. Many current issues impact the future of the family, the schools, and the world around them.
