Stress in the Classroom

Stress in the classroom means students need to learn management skills. Students display degrees of stress that are manageable in school. They may display worry, anger, frustration, or scared emotions. Thus, these feelings give a student a stomachache, headache, or an outburst of crying. Students also have stress from something at home. Causes are from a family fight or a sick family member. Also, a change in routine may cause stress in students.

Stress Management Skills

An intervention of stress-relief strategies is helpful before small problems turn into bigger problems. Simple strategies take on a few minutes of the school day.

  • Outside activities or in the gymnasium helps students to release stress.
  • In the classroom, give students time to stretch, walk around, or meditate.
  • Deep breathing before a test or activity helps students to relax and think. Students inhale to the count of 4 and excel to the count of 4. Repeat several times.
  • Also, muscle relaxation helps to relieve stress.
  • Positive images help students release tension. Tell students to think about a favorite place or a happy memory.
  • Writing down feelings in a journal makes a difference as they deal with various situations.

There are many more activities to use to help students that have academic anxiety over an activity in school. Many educators understand how life skills help students through the day. Most of these skills include the skills of problem-solving, sharing, critical thinking, and independence. However, teaching them to cope with anxiety and stress is extremely important in today’s world.

Students’ stress is usually related to everyday occurrences. They worry about challenges and activities at school. In addition to test anxiety, students exhibit concerns about bullying, social isolation, homework, physical image, and academic struggles.  They may appear stressless. Yet, they still need to learn how to relieve anxiety as they grow and deal with other circumstances. Thus, they benefit from practicing skills that help them maintain their anxiety and stress.
